Liberia Meteorological Service (LMS) Observing Station Master Plan
The Liberia Meteorological Service (LMS) has developed a national Observing Station Master Plan aimed at expanding and modernizing the country’s synoptic station network in line with Global Basic Observing Network (GBON) standards. The plan outlines a phased approach for installing new synoptic stations across strategic counties, focusing first on regions with high population density, agricultural importance, and economic activity, including Lofa, Nimba, Bong, Grand Gedeh, and Montserrado.
Currently, five synoptic stations are operational at domestic airstrips, but they face significant technical challenges such as limited internet for data transmission, inadequate maintenance, and non-compliance with WMO standards. To address these gaps, the proposed network expansion includes new stations in Foya, Belleh Yallah, Sanniquellie, Zorzor, Robertsport, Totota, Cestos City, Greenville City, and Pynes Town.
Selection criteria prioritize accessibility, security, proximity to public institutions, economic activity, and spatial coverage (100–200 km spacing). The plan seeks to enable Liberia to meet international data-sharing obligations, enhance national forecasting capacity, and support disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
