Observed Weather Conditions: First Dekad of September 2026
Rainfall
During the first dekad of September 2026, the western parts of the country experienced relatively high rainfall, with Lofa, Bomi, Montserrado, and Margibi Counties recording the highest amounts. In contrast, Maryland, Grand Kru, and River Gee Counties received relatively lower rainfall, while moderate rainfall was observed across other parts of the country.
Nationwide, accumulated rainfall during the first dekad ranged from 0.0 mm to 216.7 mm.
Soil Moisture Index (SMI)
During the first dekad of September 2026, above-normal soil moisture conditions were observed across the western and central parts of the country. However, Maryland, Grand Kru, River Gee, and parts of Grand Gedeh County experienced below-normal soil moisture conditions.
Maximum Temperature
The first dekad of September 2026 was characterized by variations in maximum temperature across the country. Nimba and parts of Bong County recorded the highest maximum temperatures, while Sinoe, River Gee, Grand Kru, and Maryland Counties experienced relatively lower maximum temperatures. Moderate maximum temperatures were observed across other parts of the country.
During this period, maximum temperatures ranged from 26.6°C to 28.9°C.
Minimum (Nighttime) Temperature
Minimum temperatures also varied across the country during the first dekad of September. The southern and central parts of the country experienced relatively higher minimum temperatures, while the northern region recorded the lowest.
Minimum temperatures ranged from 22.0°C to 26.0°C.
SEPTEMBER 2026 WEATHER OUTLOOK
Rainfall
During September 2026, rainfall is expected to increase across the country, with total monthly rainfall forecast to range from 352.2 mm to 706.5 mm.
Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, Montserrado, Margibi, Grand Bassa, and Rivercess Counties are expected to experience the highest rainfall amounts. Meanwhile, Maryland, Grand Kru, River Gee, Grand Gedeh, and parts of Nimba County are expected to record relatively lower rainfall totals.

Maximum temperatures during September 2026 are expected to range from 27.0°C to 29.2°C across the country.
Gbapolu, Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, and Grand Gedeh Counties are expected to experience relatively higher maximum temperatures, while Margibi, Grand Bassa, Sinoe, and Grand Kru Counties are expected to record relatively lower maximum temperatures. Moderate maximum temperatures are expected across the remaining parts of the country.
Minimum (Nighttime) Temperature
Minimum temperatures during September 2026 are expected to range from 20.8°C to 25.7°C across the country.
The highest minimum temperatures are expected along the coastal region, including Maryland, Grand Kru, Sinoe, Rivercess, Grand Bassa, Margibi, Montserrado, Bomi, and Grand Cape Mount Counties. The lowest minimum temperatures are expected in Lofa County, while moderate minimum temperatures are anticipated across the remaining parts of the country.
FARMER ADVISORY
As the cropping season gradually draws to a close, increased rainfall across the western and central parts of the country has resulted in increasingly wet and saturated soils. Meanwhile, parts of the southeastern region experienced reduced rainfall and declining soil moisture conditions during the first dekad of September.
The expected increase in rainfall during September may affect harvesting activities and agricultural production. Farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and agro-industries are therefore advised to take the following precautions:
1. Protect Crops and Harvested Products
Farmers across the country are advised to take extra care in their farming activities as heavy rainfall is expected to continue. Excessive rainfall may cause harvested crops and other farm products to spoil. It may also damage crops, delay harvesting, disrupt farm operations, and make transportation of agricultural products difficult.
Farmers are therefore encouraged to regularly monitor weather updates, keep farm inputs and harvested products in safe and dry places, and avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges, rivers, or other waterways during periods of heavy rainfall.
2. Monitor Crops for Pests and Diseases
Farmers are encouraged to regularly monitor their crops, as continued rainfall and wet conditions may increase the risk of pests and crop diseases.
If pests or diseases are observed, farmers should take early action using recommended agricultural practices and approved pesticides, where necessary, to reduce crop damage and yield losses.
Note: Farmers should seek advice from agricultural extension officers before using pesticides or applying pest and disease control measures.
3. Protect Livestock
Livestock producers are encouraged to keep their animals in clean, dry, and well-protected shelters, as increased rainfall and prolonged wet conditions may increase the risk of infectious diseases and respiratory illnesses.
During periods of reduced rainfall or dry conditions, livestock may also be exposed to heat stress, water shortages, reduced feed availability, and an increased risk of disease.
Livestock producers should therefore closely monitor their animals for signs of illness, heat stress, dehydration, or unusual behavior. Where symptoms are observed, farmers should seek prompt veterinary assistance and take appropriate measures to protect animal health, welfare, and productivity.
4. Vegetable Production
Vegetable producers are advised to continue farming activities in suitable upland areas and to properly plan and lay out their fields. Farmers are encouraged to use appropriate drainage and soil conservation practices to reduce the risk of waterlogging, soil erosion, and nutrient loss during periods of heavy rainfall.
Farmers should also avoid planting in areas prone to flooding and ensure that drainage channels are kept clear to allow excess water to flow away from cultivated fields.
