FARMERS' ADVISORY

Increased rainfall across western and central Liberia has resulted in progressively saturated soils, while reduced rainfall in the southeast has contributed to declining soil moisture conditions. With rainfall expected to remain higher in the western parts of the country and lower in the southeast, farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and agro-industries are advised to take appropriate precautions to minimize potential impacts on agricultural activities.

1. Farmers in High-Rainfall Areas

Farmers in western Liberia are strongly advised to take additional precautions due to the possibility of continued heavy rainfall. Persistent rainfall may cause rising river levels, localized flooding of farmlands, waterlogging, soil erosion, and damage to access roads.

Farmers are encouraged to:

  • Closely monitor weather forecasts and local advisories.
  • Secure farm inputs, harvested crops, and other agricultural materials.
  • Improve drainage around farms where necessary.
  • Avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges, and waterways.
  • Take appropriate measures to protect crops from waterlogging and flooding.

2. Pest and Disease Management

Farmers are encouraged to regularly monitor their crops, as persistent rainfall in the west and reduced rainfall in the southeast may create conditions favorable for pest and disease outbreaks.

Where pest or disease outbreaks occur, farmers should promptly adopt recommended integrated pest-management practices and use approved pesticides only when necessary. Farmers are encouraged to consult agricultural extension officers before applying pesticides to ensure their safe and appropriate use.

3. Livestock Management

Livestock producers are encouraged to keep animals in clean, dry, and well-protected shelters. Increased rainfall and prolonged wet conditions can contribute to the spread of infectious diseases and increase the risk of respiratory illnesses and other health complications.

In areas experiencing extended dry conditions, livestock may also be exposed to heat stress, water shortages, reduced feed availability, and increased disease risks.

Livestock producers should therefore:

  • Provide adequate shelter, clean water, and sufficient feed.
  • Monitor animals regularly for signs of illness, heat stress, dehydration, or abnormal behavior.
  • Maintain good hygiene and sanitation around livestock facilities.
  • Seek prompt veterinary assistance when signs of disease or distress are observed.

4. Vegetable Production

Vegetable producers are advised to continue farming activities on upland areas where possible. Farmers should properly design and lay out their fields and establish adequate drainage systems to reduce waterlogging, soil erosion, and nutrient loss during periods of heavy rainfall.

The use of appropriate soil and water conservation practices is strongly encouraged to protect agricultural land and sustain crop productivity.
