FARMERS' ADVISORIES
As the cropping season gradually draws to a close, rainfall conditions vary across Liberia. Although rainfall is expected to decrease overall, some areas may continue to experience substantial rainfall, potentially affecting harvesting, post-harvest management, transportation, and agricultural production. Farmers and agricultural stakeholders are advised to take the following precautions:
- Harvesting and post-harvest management: Monitor weather forecasts and plan harvesting accordingly. Properly dry harvested crops and store them in clean, dry, well-ventilated facilities to minimize spoilage and post-harvest losses. Protect farm inputs and equipment from moisture.
- Crop pests and diseases: Regularly inspect crops for pests and diseases, particularly in areas experiencing prolonged wet conditions. Apply recommended crop management practices and use approved pesticides only when necessary. Consult agricultural extension officers before applying pesticides.
- Livestock management: Provide animals with safe, well-ventilated shelters, clean drinking water, and adequate feed. Monitor livestock for signs of illness, heat stress, dehydration, or abnormal behavior, and seek veterinary assistance promptly when necessary.
- Vegetable production and soil conservation: Where suitable, cultivate vegetables on well-drained upland sites. Maintain proper field drainage and adopt soil conservation practices to reduce waterlogging, soil erosion, and nutrient loss during heavy rainfall.
- Weather monitoring: Regularly follow weather updates and agrometeorological advisories issued by the Liberia Meteorological Service (LMS). Consult agricultural extension officers for appropriate farm management guidance.
Note: Farmers should seek advice from agricultural extension officers before using pesticides or implementing pest and disease control measures.
